Herrenhausen Symposium 2021
Originally planned as a face-to-face event at Herrenhausen Palace in Hanover, the symposium "Reusing Churches. New Perspectives in a European Comparison" was held as a digital event from 15-17 February 2021 due to coronavirus. 700 people from 24 countries took part. The 65 speakers, panellists, conference observers and young researchers came from 15 countries: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA.
The symposium brought together representatives from various disciplines who discussed the topic from different perspectives and in international comparison. In particular, these were the perspectives of cultural studies and theology, architecture and urban planning, monument preservation, users, the property industry, the public and rural areas.
The symposium centred on seven sections, each dedicated to one of the aforementioned perspectives. Young researchers presented 19 research projects in four poster presentations. Integrated into the conference was the public Herrenhäuser Gespräch organised by NDR, which discussed the topic in relation to Germany. Church reuse from Hanover and the Hanover region were presented in a panel discussion. And finally, two exhibitions were presented.
The symposium, sponsored by the Volkswagen Foundation, was organised by Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Kerstin Gothe, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Prof. Dr. Paul Post, Tilburg University, Prof. Dr. Johannes Stückelberger, University of Bern, and the Volkswagen Foundation, Hanover.
